We can let many things define us, including our family of origin, our peers in school, co-workers, failures, failed relationships, Hollywood, Facebook, Instagram, or our own conclusions. How is that working? I’m guessing it’s fine if you grew up in a perfect family, haven’t faced many hardships, haven’t taken failures personally, have no learning differences, have a perfect body, and have great self-esteem. Most of us can’t say that. For some of us, life has been hard, trying, and marked by losses, disappointments, and failures. Where do we find our worth?

It Is Written

1 PETER 1:3 -5 Blessed [gratefully praised and adored] be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant and boundless mercy has caused us to be born again [that is, to be reborn from above—spiritually transformed, renewed, and set apart for His purpose] to an ever-living hope and confident assurance through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 [born anew] into an inheritance which is imperishable [beyond the reach of change] and undefiled and unfading, reserved in heaven for you, 5 who are being protected and shielded by the power of God through your faith for salvation that is ready to be revealed [for you] in the last time.

Scripture Defines Believers

These four verses tell us who we are: sprinkled with His blood, spiritually well, experiencing increasing abundance, and reborn from above—spiritually transformed, renewed, and set apart for His purpose, with an ever-living hope and confident assurance, an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, protected and shielded by the power of God. That’s who God says we are! Let everything else roll off! Straighten your crown and walk with your head up!

Prayer

Lord, I forgive those who labeled me and hurt me with their words and actions. I forgive myself for the ways I have failed and messed up. I let go of the names others have called me and the names I have called myself. I hold fast to who You say I am. Help me walk as the person You say I am and as You created me to be.

Takeaway

I am who God says I am.
